As we commence this new Unit of Inquiry it is important that you have an understanding of Blooms Taxonomy. Simply put Blooms Taxonomy is a way for the sorting and grouping of different levels of learning. All learning starts at the lower levels of knowledge and understanding. We then progress to higher order thinking skills such as comparing and contrasting, making graphs etc to show how we can apply our understanding of new knowledge. To help with your understanding of Blooms I have created the activity below based on the book “The Outsiders”. Please complete this activity and post in your blog.

Activities using Blooms Taxonomy

1.
Knowledge- select one character from the novel “The Outsiders” who has the qualities of a heroine/hero. List the qualities and tell why you think they are heroic. I am choosing Johnny Cade because he has this natural heroic heart. First of all, he sacrifices his life for helping little kids that were stuck inside a burning abandoned church. Before it all happened, he killed Bob Sheldon just to save ponyboy's life.

2. Comprehension- CONSTRUCT a time line that. summarises what happens in the story “The Outsiders”. Ponyboy was the youngest in the gang. He was only a 14-year old teenager. He has 2 older brothers, the oldest one, Darry was the one who take care of the brothers after their parents died in a car accident. He never got home early, he always hung out with his Greasers friends especially Dally and Johhny. Until one night, after his fight with his brother he ran away and met the Socs in a park and bullied Johnny, saved his life by killing Bob Sheldon. They were so scared that the police will run after them, so they quickly ask for Dally's help and went to an abandoned church for about 3 days. But then, in the end of the story Johnny died after saving innocent children in a burning old church.

3. Application- THINK of a situation that occurred to a character in the story “The Outsiders” and write about how you would have handled the situation differently. If I were one of them, I would definitely handle the situation differently by not getting in trouble.

4. Analysis- IDENTIFY general characteristics (stated and/or implied) of one of the main characters and complete the table below.

Characters Name Ponyboy

Physical characteristics: Tall, has a greasy hair, skinny.

Personality:
Brave, honest, hates fight, he's personality is different than the others in a good way.

Major challenges/problems: The way they protect themselves caused them to get into trouble.

5. Synthesis- WRITE three new titles for the story that would give a good idea what it is about.
Teenagers Life
Gang of Boys
The Greasers

OR

CREATE an original character and tell how the character would fit in the story.

6. Evaluation- DECIDE which character in the selection you would most like to spend a day with and describe why.
Ponyboy, because he's the main character and he was the narrator of the story. So there are lots of information about himOR

JUDGE whether or not a character should have acted in a particular way and
why.
